Ask your buddy for his empty Mountain Dew bottle, throw in a dip and sit around the TV-lookidy box to enjoy Adult Swim’s latest Squidbilles DVD. Volume 5 brings us 10 episodes from season 5 (season 6 on IMDB), and bonus content including Art + Music, Pete Stuff and behind-the-scenes featurettes. This hilarious torrent of Hillbilly comedy gives us even more adventures of the Cuyler Clan and features Guest Stars such as T-Pain, Jesco White & more.
Squidbillies is the story of the squids living in rural Georgia; Early, Granny, Rusty and at times Aunt Lil. Early is voiced by Unknown Hinson, Granny by Dana Snyder, Rusty by Daniel McDevitt and much more.
10 episodes included in this DVD: Snow Daddy, Velvet Messiah, Asbestos I Can, Class of ’86, The Big E, Keeping it in the Family Way, Ballmart, The Pharaoh’s Wad, Return of Gaga Pee Pap, and Trucked Up. A good bit of these episodes are classics, which is hard for a show in it’s 5th season.

The voice acting of squidbillies is just terrific, featuring some of the most accurate and accented voices. I’m often mystified by the intergrity of the emotions projected from the voice actors which is just a testament to how good the actors are. The voices are mixed very well and mesh effectively. Great job to the team at Williams Street.
The music in this season is very good, many experimental versions of the opening theme as you’ll see in the DVD extras, namely art+music and the other behind the scenes featurettes featuring such artists as Bill Joe Shaver, George Jones, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Trampled by Turtles, Widespread panic and more.
It really is worth spending a couple hours playing through all the episodes on this DVD. Between Early’s many decal hats, Granny’s cephalopod nymhpomania, Rusty’s Gullible nature, the poor sheiriffs attempts to keep the peace, or Dan Halen’s sociopathic narcissism or the hijinks everyone gets into, you’re sure to have a few laughs.
Squidbillies Volume 5 on DVD receives a 9/10 from this writer and I hope you’ll check out Squidbillies airing on CartoonNetwork/adultswim @ 12:30 Monday thru Friday and @ 12:15 on sunday (at the time this review was written).
