Sexy computer screens, flying aircraft carriers and more supes than you can sling a web at (still wish we had spidey…).The Avengers hit theaters
backed by tremendous momentum of it’s precursing Marvel movies that introduced us to it’s main characters and the actor’s that would be playing them in the film. Iron Man was the movie that ignited it all for Marvel Studios. It was the movie that proved Spidey wasn’t the only Marvel Movie Mogul. The Avengers was no easy feat, written by Joss Whedon (Nerd Moses) The Avengers faced many challenges. Being the first movie to combine (4-5) different themes of different filmmakers, Avengers also faced the challenge of holding up to the mountain of hype created by fans, new and old. Needless to say, Joss Whedon delivered, period. Expectations were shattered and Avengers made more money than Marvel could hold “pulling in $200.3 million in just three days to become the biggest opening weekend of all time” –http://avengersnews.com ( for current figures see http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avengers11.htm)
The Avengers takes place internationally, Calcutta, Germany, New York, ….the sky….. and Follows Shields attempts and partial successes to unite the heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America, fresh from thaw (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk, who’s hiding (Mark Ruffalo) along with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Shield operatives. Matched against Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his Army, The Chitauri. The Avengers must unite to save the world. And believe it or not, after a lot of petty fighting among themselves, they actually do it, save for a lot of New York City…. This isn’t to say that NYC was destroyed, it nearly was, however it did take a pretty rough beating. The movie followed a pretty familar Whedon story structure in that the heroes are originally antagonistic towards each other, all think of themselves and Leaders or Lone Wolves but eventually realize they are much stronger when they are together and unite to finally defeat Loki, yet arrive too late to prevent an invasion of the Chitauri. Like most stories they prevail and New York City is left standing (barely).
I enlisted the Help of My Friend and Comic Extrordinare, Jeff Adams to sit down and discuss the film with me, Here’s our mini-podcast, we hope you enjoy:
